Past News and commentry!

Have returned from my favourite place Thailand after a fantastic recharge and beautiful living, inspired to start this years images, abstracting the feelings of the warmth I get from this different world.

2013?!!

We are now into the second month of the year and my annual holiday starts. Off once more to the Far East where I recharge my batteries, sketch the view and soak in the orient deep into my soul. I love this place to escape the madness of the western drawl. Where I can feel real and alive with no strings pulling me left or right. Its just simple calm and free.

See you when (or if) I return!

A real day to remember as one of my favorite artists Albert Irvin visited my gallery. He was in Plymouth to receive a doctorate from Plymouth College of art and I had the great honor of his company as he popped into see me.

My annual exhibition is up and Private View was a major success, The Exhibition runs until November 30th and then followed by a collective show of some past work for the run up to Christmas.

We now have an art shop with smaller items including photography, ceramics and Jewellery so pop in for a pre Christmas brows.

...PULSE is in the new gallery and finishes off the new gallery with beautiful sounds.

Echomap have an interactive sound sculpture on display at the Martin Bush Gallery in Plymouth

The Echomap sound art and installations combine interactive sensors and purpose built software to create unique, immersive and interactive soundscapes.

A  sound engine generates music in real-time rather than using loops, sequences or recordings - it contains a set of rules outlining how to play, but is not following a pre-defined score.

A variety of sensors allow people to interact with the soundscapes via the software.

The Pulse sculpture was created by Tim Potts to both be tactile and to house the sensors required to interface with the sound engine.  It's name derives from the fact that sometimes, if you find the right spot, the sensors will react purely to your pulse.  Visitors are encouraged to explore both the physical and audio nature of the piece via a 'please touch' policy.

The music is the work of Shaun Bailey and Clive Mollart  who work together to create interactive sound art under the name of echomap.

Their ambient / electronic music is produced under the name  Monkey Trial.

Shaun explains a little more

" Our 'Pulse' sound sculpture was exhibited at the Martin Bush Gallery in Plymouth towards the end of last year - went to Staffordshire  and is now back at  Martin Bush's gallery at the Royal William Yard.

More recently we've developed a sensor-enabled 'sound wall' for a sound therapy garden.

A common feature with our installations is the use of our own software to firstly create soundscapes in real-time , and secondly to interpret the way people interact with the soundscape using various sensors ( eg for 'Pulse' the sensors are housed in a sculpture)."

Artistic expression should never be static; it should reflect the energy, experiences, emotions and evolution of the artist and their craft. The paintings in this show chart a year in the life of Martin Bush. Displaying both exuberance and restraint, they follow a journey through seasons and emotions; dark and moody pieces are counterbalanced by vibrant colourful canvases; small and intimate jewels cohabit with large jaw-dropping visions.

Martin chose to live and work in Plymouth because it emanates a modern fresh energy rooted in a colourful past and beautiful location; the regeneration of the historic Royal William Yard, where he is artist in residence, exemplifies this. Such vigor and inspiration provide a catalyst to his own experiences and emotions as he paints.
A diverse fusion of colours, different types of paint and various finishes are hallmarks of Martin’s paintings; as these have been experimented with new styles and interpretations have emerged. Treating his raw materials with respect, Martin has generated harmonious movement, power and spirit in each of his canvases.
Colour, movement and energy remain at the core of this new beginning; as well as opening up fresh avenues of expression, reinterpretation brings added depth and perspective to both his more figurative and pure abstract painting. The journey has animated an enthusiasm which has freed Martin to breakthrough to a higher level; vibrancy transcends feeling and reality to go beyond the present to imagine a dreamt world.

It is interesting to be able to look back over a year and reflect on an artist’s mood changes as the seasons pull and twist his palette and attitude to what is created. The influences of the Royal William Yard’s past, estuarine position and rebirth can be sensed as the art delves in and out of pure abstract through striking, vibrant colours and sumptuous marks contrasting with darker more subtle tones.

Some find the innovation of the abstract speaks to them, others find engagement with pieces outside of their comfort zone a challenge. Whatever the reaction, excellence in art produces engagement and discussion often leading to heightened enjoyment of Martin’s work.

I am also involved with ParkArt which is an ongoing exhibition at Tamar Science Park
